Thursday, Casey Ashley of South Carolina hit a submerged floating log while heading back to Lake Guntersville State Park. The collision took the lower unit off Ashley's outboard, but Arkansas pro Mike Wurm happened by a few minutes later, saw that Ashley was in trouble and stopped to help. Ashley transferred his Marshal and his catch to Wurm's boat and made it back to the landing with three minutes to spare. Complete Story |

Mikes' Quick Tip: Fall is a great time to be on the water. Hunters are in the woods and football fans are watching TV, so you might have the lake all to yourself. The bass are eating a lot as they get ready for cold weather. The shad are bunching up an dmoving to the backs of creeks. Early in the day, I like to fish a Buzzbait on the flats in the backs of creeks. When the bass are schooling, the topwater action can be terrific. Later in the day I'll go to a crankbait in a shad or crawfish color and cover a lot of water when the fish aren't hitting on the surface. You can bet they're still there even though they're not feeding on top or being quite as aggressive. It just takes a different look or approach to catch them.
If the action slows down, it's time to go back across your productive area with a different approach. That's when I'll pick up a Quantum Mike Wurm Signature Series PT spinning rod and fineese jig. It's a great finesse approach for bass that have seen a lot of big, fast-moving baits. That little jig catches some very big bass, and it'll help you catch fish that wouldn't go for the reaction-type baits. Put it in heavy cover and work it slowly and methodically to catch bass that other anglers are missing.
